 India is facing its worsts electricity shortage in more the sir years just as scorching temperatures forces early closures of schools and send  people indoors.

In the capital New Delhi , temp have soared past 40 degree celsius for several days and forecst to linger  around 44c untill sunday , 

with peak summer heat still to come before cooling monsoon rains arrive in june .

                                        POWER CUTS

Local authorities in the worst hit states are struggling to juggle power cuts and growing pressure on health servies.

Power cuts last anywhere btw 2 to 16 hrs - such as parets of Jk , which faced a power shortage of 11.62 % in the past week,

second only Jharkhand which faced a shortage of 17.28%

                                  Worst in 6  years

ELECTRICITY supply fell short of demand by 1.88 billion units ,or 1.6 % during the ist 27 days of april , the worst monthly short fall in over six years  .

Power cuts in five states , including Rjasthan and Haryana in north and AP in South , were the worst in over last 5-6 years .

It may get worse as electricity demand is expected to rise another 10% by next month, the power ministry said earlier this week.

                                IMPACT ON INDUSTRIES 

Industrial disruption and widespread power cuts are bad news for corporate India , as economic activity has just started to pick up after months of stagnation amid coronavirus lockdowns .

Power cuts are expected to worsen in the coming days as the HEATWAVES and pickup in economics activity are seen inc electricity demand at the fastest pace in nearly four decades.

According to news agency AFP, more than 6000 people in India have died due to heatwaves in the last decade. The waves put blue-collar workers — including rickshaw drivers, street vendors, construction workers, delivery people — at greater risk since they are usually working out in the sun. To ensure the situation doesn’t get any worse, the government of Gujarat has instructed hospitals to set up special wards for heat stroke and other heat-related diseases.

                                      COAL SHORTAGES

India is currently facing shortage of coal for its power plants.

The leap in power demand has left India scrambling  for coal, the dominant fuel useed in electricity generation in the country .

Coal inventories are at the lowest pre summer levels in the least nine yearsyears.
